Gauge Training Inc is a Veteran Owned-Veteran Operated company headquartered in Houston Texas and providing Hands On training in the proper measurement and gauging for OCTG and Drill Pipe threaded products.  Established in 2017 and licensed by the American Petroleum Institute’s University Division as an approved provider in April of 2019.

GT Inc is a Fully Documented Provider of approved training utilizing a “small class” model (maximum 10 students per training session) to provide superior “one on one” interaction between instructor and student.  Utilizing a variety of gauging equipment and adhering strictly to the API specifications 5CT, 7.2 and 5B1, GT Inc is a unique provider focused on first class instruction and repeatability, performance, and achievement.

The successful student must pass BOTH a written comprehension examination and a “hands-on” performance examination and achieve an 80+ percentile score to be awarded a two-year API Approved Accreditation as a Thread Inspector.  GT Inc also provides an “introductory” online program for new personnel and to help prepare for the more intense and comprehensive in-person training programs.

Timeline of Achievements


  • June of 2017 – Gauge Training Inc. was founded by a father and son team. Sean and Connor O’Boyle have over 50 years of combined experience in the oil and gas industry.

  • July 2017 – March 2019, Connor O’Boyle worked closely with the senior API spec writers to create a one of a kind thread inspection course. All course materials are based off API specifications and knowledge obtained from working in various shops, including thread gauge manufacturers.

  • April 2019 – Received API-U approval for thread inspection courses.

  • April 2019 – Conducted first Tubing and Casing thread inspection course.

  • June 2019 – Conducted first Rotary Shouldered connection inspection course.

  • September 2019 – Robert Mims joins Gauge Training Inc. as a trainer.

  • February 2020 – Debuted first Calibration Theory course.

  • April 2020 – Created online beginner courses for both Rotary Shouldered Connections (RSC) and Tubing & Casing Connections (T&C)

  • July 2020 – Mr. Steven Loomis joins Gauge Training Inc. as premium thread expert.

  • November 2021 – Received API-U approval for our new GT Plaque Program to present Facility Achievement Awards.

  • August 2022 – First inductee to GT Plaque Program. Presented first Facility Achievement Award to SeAH Steel USA in Houston, Texas. Becoming the first API Accredited Thread Inspection Facility!!

  • November 2022 – Alloy Machine Works Houston facility qualifies for our second Facility Achievement Award. They are now recognized as an API accredited thread inspection facility.  

  • March 2023 – Stoos USA Conroe facility qualifies for our third Facility Achievement Award. This facility is now recognized as an API accredited thread inspection facility.

Gauge Training Inc (GTI) is a Texas based company providing instruction in the proper techniques for gauging tread forms in compliance with API specifications utilizing proper methods and practices for said gauging.  GTI is fully licensed by API-U to provide training and training verification certification to multiple API Specifications in the field of thread inspection.  GTI utilizes a variety of regularly available gauging equipment from multiple manufacturers to conduct classes.  GTI is NOT a manufacturer, distributer, manufacturer’s representative or provider of gauging equipment.

GTI does NOT endorse any particular gauging equipment over any other and does NOT promote the sale or use of any particular equipment.  GTI does not represent any manufacturer of any type of equipment and assumes no responsibility or liability for the use of any such equipment by any entity in possession of gauging equipment manufactured by any 3rd party manufacturing company.

GTI instruction is focused on the compliance to API Standards & Specification and teaches techniques and operating instructions according to and under license from API-U.  GTI is not registered, authorized, approved, licensed or otherwise working in conjunction with or under any type of cooperation agreement with any manufacturer of gauging equipment.  Rather, GTI uses commonly available gauging equipment already in wide use in the industry without any obligation or necessity for approval from any equipment manufacturers.  GTI makes NO assurances or statements of reliability, appropriateness of specific use, or warrantee for any of the equipment used in conducting our classes. 

Gauge Training & API-U

Gauge Training Inc is authorized under contract with API-U to provide teaching activities, train industry individuals in the proper use of readily available gauging equipment, conduct an examination to confirm the retention of the training information and provide an affidavit that the individual has completed the course satisfactorily according to GTI established standards.  GTI does NOT certify any individual as qualified for any specific industry occupation or discipline nor does GTI bear any responsibility for the conduct of gauge inspection techniques by any individual post training.  Rather, GTI certifies that the individual completing the instruction class has been provided specific training, has completed such training and has been tested on that training in a classroom environment and achieved a passing score on the internal GTI test.
